As part of our Baptismal responsibilities, we are called to open ourselves to His life-giving Spirit and make Him known and loved to others. With Martha and Mary, we are called to profess our belief that Jesus is indeed the Resurrection and the Life.What opportunities have been open to you as parishioners that, in normal times, might not have presented themselves? Things have been happening – or not happening – that none of us could have predicted or imagined. Our Lenten journey this year has surely been one that calls for faith and hope.Reflections for discussion and consideration: Jesus shows His power over death so that, when He Himself dies, those who believe in Him might remember and take hope. The Gospel story of the Raising of Lazarus is set against the backdrop of Jesus' own imminent death, the many elements of it foreshadowing the Good News of His own Resurrection. And our bodies will be raised up in glory on the Last Day. In the Eucharist, we receive Christ's Body into ours. In the Sacrament of Baptism, our bodies became Temples of the Holy Spirit. We are made in the divine image and likeness.

Today's Gospel shows Jesus engaging with a group of people who are in crisis because of a death. We all know how death can destroy plan and dreams. Jesus said, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go." He was wrapped up with strips of linen and a cloth around his face. Then he prayed to God and said, "Lazarus, come out!", and from the cave Lazarus came walking out. It was a cave with a stone over the opening.

They went to the place where Lazarus had been buried. When Jesus saw them crying, he also cried with them. She said the same thing that Martha had said, "If you had been here he would not have died. Martha went to get her sister, Mary, who came and fell at Jesus' feet. She said, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who was to come into the world." Jesus talked to her about the resurrection and asked her if she believed. She didn't seem to understand that Jesus was talking about a time very soon. Jesus said, "Your brother will rise again." Martha thought he was speaking of the resurrection at the end of time. She said that if Jesus had been there, Lazarus would not have died. He was at the edge of the town, but had not entered it yet.

Martha heard that Jesus was coming and she ran out of the house to meet him. When Jesus finally decided to go to Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days. He waited and during that time Lazarus died. One day Martha sent word to Jesus that Lazarus was sick, but He didn't go to them right away.
